Annual Membership/JuneBoard Meeting - included a program how to green your house
Posted: 22. Jun. 2010 - 09:25

Our annual meeting was held at Blue Spruce Lodge. It  a was pot luck dinner. Everyone brought a side dish. We will supplied hot dogs, rolls and drinks.

If you are environmentally minded should not your home be green?  Joe Ferrraro, of EcoLogic, told us how we can have a greener home.  He calls his presentation “The Evolution of Home Performance”.  If saving energy or a Net Zero House interests you, it was a really interesting program.

The meeting will also included election of new and returning board members and Evergreen will present an annual update.

Girl Scouts at Tanoma
Posted: 17. May. 2010 - 12:51

Twenty seven girl scouts attended a day long activities at Tanoma AMD Wetlands Educational Site to work on receiving their eco-action badge. The badge included various activities to build skills, learn about technology, do service projects and explore career possibilities in the careers related to the environment. We had a demonstration of our wind turbine, they did water testing, learned about stream critters, and how water can be polluted through a demonstration of the water simulator. They went on a systems walk to understand how the passive system works and had fun making tie-dye T-shirts from the iron oxide in the collection ponds. They learned recycling options and were shown how plants can be used as an environmentally friendly substitute to cleaning with chemicals. It was a very full day.

Thanks to all the members who helped leading sessions with the girls: Adam Cotchen, Anne Daymut, John Dudash, Cindy Rogers, Yvonne Branan, Dan Boone, Paul and Mary Yacovone, and Susan McClure. Thanks also to the people behind the scenes who helped by mowing the grass and prepping the site.

Thanks to all the great girl scouts and their leaders and parents who came out to learn more about their environment and to Georgenne Gillespie and Sandy Gandolfi  who helped coordinate this event. Hope to see you all back again!

Story Walk at Tanoma
Posted: 17. May. 2010 - 12:49

Story Walk installed at Tanoma

Have you met Grandfather Twilight? Clue – He lives among the trees.  Clue- He loves to take a stroll in the late evening.  You will soon be able to meet Grandfather Twilight at the Tanoma Wetlands Environmental Education Center.

“Grandfather Twilight” will be Tanoma’s StoryWalk, with 22 stations, each a page from Barbara Helen Berger’s illustrated book for children. The StoryWalk program is a partnership between Indiana County Parks & Trails, Indiana Free Library, and Friends of the Parks.

Perhaps you have seen these StoryWalks at Blue Spruce Park, on the Ghost Town Trail, Memorial Park, and Pine Ridge Park.

StoryWalk is a program that combines fitness and literacy.  The idea for StoryWalk originated in 2007 With Anne Ferguson, a volunteer with the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition.  Children’s books are taken apart, laminated, and posted on stakes along hiking trails. Families combine reading an exercise as they follow the story along the trail

The original StoryWalk was a partnership between the Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, VT.

In Indiana County the project was spearheaded by Kate Geiger and Joan Rittenberger of the Indiana Free Library and Ed Patterson of Indiana County Parks and Trails.

Evergreen Conservancy would like to thank Mr. Patterson and his maintenance crew for assembling the Grandfather Twilight story.
